Chile Promotes Effective Pro-Life Policies at UN Commission

Posted on | March 9, 2011 by Terrence McKeegan, J.D. |

Last week at the UN Commission on the Status of Women, the delegate from Chile made a very strong statement to refute the claim that legalizing abortion helps to reduce maternal mortality.

The statement references Chile’s criminalization of therapeutic abortion in 1989, and the subsequent 89 percent drop in maternal deaths since then, based on research by Dr. Elard Koch of the University of Chile.

Chile was recently awarded the International Protect Life Award for having strong pro-life laws and the lowest maternal mortality rate in Latin America.

The Chilean delegate also credited a program started by former Chilean president Michele Bachelet, who now heads UN Women, with helping to create a pro-life environment that also reduced maternal mortality. UN insiders say that this caused quite a stir as Bachelet has been widely praised by abortion activists and made honorary co-chair of the pro-abortion Women Deliver conference last year.

Chile’s statement begins at 1:55:35 in the webcast below.
