True Finns don’t want abortion, gay marriage

Yesterday’s general elections in Finland have resulted in a spectacular success of a new political movement called the “True Finns”, which, having won 4,5% of the vote back in 2007, have now increased their share to 19%. This makes them the third largest political movement in the country (after the Conservatives with 20,5% and the Social Democrats with 19,1%). It is expected that the True Finns will be part of the next Government.

Besides strong EU-skepticism (especially with regard to the bailout scheme to rescue the Euro), the True Finns’ program includes the request to prohibit abortion and to adopt a constitutional provision that would exclude the legal recognition of gay “marriage”.

The leader of the movement is Mr. Timo Soini (picture), who – very un-Finnish! – converted to Catholicism several years ago during a travel to Ireland. Only some 10.000 out of Finland’s 5 million inhabitants (i.e., a mere 0.2%) are Catholics.
