The Secretary of Gender, Youth and Child Development in Trinidad and Tabago, Verna St Rose Greaves announced this week that she supports not only the legalization of abortion but also the promotion of gay rights.
At a stakeholder consultation on the “National Policy on Gender and Development” held in country she stated, ”I am a human rights activist and I am in support of it (a law to make abortion legal)”. She also stated that homosexuality “is a topic we must deal with. This is our society and we would be foolish to pretend there are not people among us who are homosexual…It’s only when we deal with these issue would we be moving forward as a society that is on its way to being fully developed”.
Though she spoke very passionately about both issues, she made it clear that she could not be understood as speaking on behalf of the government.
Currently abortion is legal in Trinidad and Tobago only in cases where the life of the mother is threatened.
